On
The Track Racing Magazine is what it's name says
it is...a magazine with a motorsport editorial.
You might well think that we are getting a bit
sidetracked then by doing a story on a Lotus road
car. Well not quite, you see this little thing is
really a full blown track car.....
-
Ken
Cloud was there at the beginning, he was the first
champion and he is still racing today. Since
it's inception the Lotus Register had always
enjoyed a spirit of healthy competition.
-
Motor racing in
the 60's in South Africa was a tough business and
victory came only to the truly committed. In this
issue of OTTR we pay homage to a tough and
committed racing Legend, Peter De Klerk

-
To become a champion in any
given discipline of Motor Racing the pilot of said
vehicle needs to win races. Many factors
contribute to success on the podium; decent,
reliable and fast equipment; a measure of good
fortune; and of course a skilled capable rider.
One such legend who has ridden his way to many a
superb win and now inspires the new breed is none
other than Howard Mellet.
-
Jackie van Breda -
Jackie's interest and involvement in motorsport
began in the early 1970s when her elder brother
Mike started racing saloon cars at Kyalami. At
that stage, her late dad, older brother Tony and
Jackie comprised his pit crew. Lap scoring,
time-keeping, signalling and team administration
were soon acquired as essential skills.
-
As their engines fire up the
ground begins to shake and adrenaline starts to
pump. The roar of their motors is like an
orchestra of growling lions. One by one they exit
the pits and make their way onto the circuit. They
are like hungry beasts waiting to pounce on their
prey as they approach the start line, engines
revving, gears engaged, waiting, waiting. The
lights go out and the race begins, the sound of
rolling thunder reverberates through each
spectator as thousands of angry horses begin the
battle....these are the mighty Wesbank V8
Supercars.
-
In 1965 a young 23 year old man
entered a novice race event at Kyalami driving a
Morris 1000 powered by a Cortina 1500 GT engine.
Arriving too late for practice, he started 36th.
He won the race, and lapped almost all the other
competitors in doing so. His name – Willie
Hepburn. This was to be the start of an
illustrious career in Motor Racing; one that would
see him becoming a household name amongst South
Africans.

A1
Grand Prix
- On 30 March 2004, A1 Grand Prix, a brand new
concept in international motorsport was launched
to the world's press at the prestigious Jumeira

-
Superbikes On The Grid - Up until 2007 the
1000cc and 600cc bikes shared the track making it
difficult for the regional riders to step up to
the 600cc class as the 1000cc riders would lap up
to the back of the top 10.
-
Porsche 917 Re-Born -
When I was a teenager all my mates had posters of
a White Countach on their bedroom walls. That
Lambo was an icon to them. Me, I had a 917k in
Gulf livery on the wall, car number 24 with Jo
Siffert behind the wheel duking it out with Jacky
Ickx in the Ferrari 512 at Spa 1971..

-
Hennie Groenewald

and others, star on the international scene, so we
in South Africa have our own home grown heroes
whose fortunes are followed by an enthusiastic fan
base..
-
Then & Now
- I must admit, i didn't expect to have a hugely
thrilling day as I drove to Zwartkops very early
on Saturday morning on the 2nd of February 2008
for the Springbok Revival. But I was pleasantly
surprised.
